Peanuts are one of the foodstuffs that give the greatest risk of allergic and anaphylactic reactions. There have also been described some cases where people who are sensitive to peanuts in food have reacted with anaphylactic shock using creams etc. which contains peanuts. It is the proteins in the oil that cause allergy and therefore the peanut oil used in cosmetics today must be purified. In December 2017 the EU Commission set a maximum concentration for residual protein content in peanut oil including extracts and derivatives thereof of 0.5 ppm.

Regulation 2017/2228 of the EU Commission enters into force on 25 September 2018. Subsequently products that do not comply with the new limit values is no longer allowed in Europe.

Allergic reactions to food allergens are mostly caused by proteins. Therefore the allergy label has requirements that the ingredient must be purified for proteins. This is however not considered an option for Peanut oil therefore the substance is not allowed in products with Asthma-Allergy Denmark?s allergy labelling The Blue Label or Asthma Allergy Nordic.
